The Great Commission
September 11, 2013
When one hears the phrase, “The Great Commission,” it normally brings to mind the passage from Matthew where Jesus stated, “‘All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen’” (Matthew 28:18-20). Jesus, however, gave many directives, commands and orders concerning what His followers should do. We have decided to give this passage the name, “The Great Commission,” but there are some passages that have been neglected, in my opinion.
For example, also in Matthew, Jesus said, “‘And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give’” (Matthew 10:7-8). Jesus gave us four commands: “heal, cleanse, raise and cast out.” Some denominations claim that the days of miracles are over, and that these commands don’t apply to modern-day believers. Unfortunately, that is the problem in the North American church. We have chosen not to believe, and, because of that, our nation and church are in decline.
“Lord, bring a great revival that will bring these signs, miracles and wonders back to the church so that many will come to faith in your Son, Jesus. May it happen soon!”
